Courses for English and Literacy

Phonics Fun 1 for Y2 - Y4

A different way to present phonics. This course is about long vowel phonemes, encouraging children to learn in a fun-filled way.

The course runs for 6 weeks, four sessions a week. Each session lasts 25 minutes.

Cost is £160.00 per pupil, £80.00 for pupils within the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Literacy Boosters for Y6

This course supports Level 3/4 children in preparation for the KS2 SATs. The course has been recently updated and children explore the features of report, narrative and persuasive writing. They are given opportunities to write examples from each genre and are offered ways forward by the DLC teacher. The course culminates with a 4-week block of comprehension activities where the emphasis is on literal, inference and deduction skills. Each of the 4 units can be purchased separately.

The course runs for 14 sessions, each session lasts 45 minutes.

Total cost £168.00 per pupil, £84.00 for pupils within the East Riding of Yorkshire, or units can be purchased separately.

Flights of Fancy for Gifted & Talented Y1 and Y2

The story 'Toad' by Ruth Brown will be used as a model to help the children plan and develop their own story, using research skills and powerful adjectives to good effect in generating imaginative, thoughtful text.

The course runs for 3 sessions, each lasting 45 minutes.

Flights of Fancy for Gifted & Talented Y3 and Y4

This course supports pupils who need to develop their basic English skills. Through a detailed study of "The Whales' Song" by Dyan Sheldon and Gary Blythe the children will create their own story.

The children will examine the use of similes and how they create atmosphere, characterisation and characters’ feelings and emotions and imaginative vocabulary to enhance their stories. They will research a chosen animal on the Internet to base their story around.

The course runs for 6 sessions, each lasting 45 minutes.

Flights of Fancy for Gifted & Talented Y5 and Y6

An image 'Oscar and Alphonse' by Chris Van Allsburg is used as a stimulus to writing a story. Discussion, sharing of ideas and constructive criticism by peers are all used to create a piece of original writing.

The course runs for 6 sessions, each lasting 45 minutes.

Flights of Adventure for Gifted & Talented Y2 and Y3 'To The Rescue!'

This course extends non-fiction writing for Gifted and Talented pupils in Key Stage 1 and lower Key Stage 2. It builds on report, information and instructional writing. Ever wanted to lead a double life? Have superpowers and change the world? Now the children have the opportunity to do just that. They will explore global issues affecting the world and how they would use superpowers to stop them! They will read and analyse a variety of online materials before planning and writing their own superhero fact files. Speaking and listening skills are developed as they are a crucial part of the online lessons.

The course runs for 6 sessions, each lasting 45 minutes (with extra activities on the accompanying VLE).

Flights of Adventure for Gifted & Talented Y3 and Y4 'The M.I.S.S. Spy Academy'

This course extends non-fiction writing for Gifted and Talented pupils in lower Key Stage 2. It builds on recount and instructional writing. The children become part of the M.I.S.S. Spy Academy and research both fictional and actual secret agents through online biographies and websites. The course focuses on a mission from Q-Division to design the best gadget for use on secret missions! They will also explore the case of the real life spy Alexander Litvinenko and the role of the media in modern society. During all stages of the writing process children are encouraged to work collaboratively and develop their speaking and listening skills along with their writing...

The course runs for 6 sessions, each lasting 45 minutes (with extra activities on the accompanying VLE).

Flights of Adventure for Gifted & Talented Y5 and Y6 'The Roswell Incident'

This course extends non-fiction writing for Gifted and Talented pupils in Upper Key-stage 2. It builds on Persuasive, Journalistic and Formal writing. The course revolves around reading a series of online news and witness reports about the Roswell Incident. What did happen in July 1947? We will explore the question 'Is anybody out there?' The children will enhance their speaking and listening skills as we evaluate all the evidence on extra terrestrial activities.

The course runs for 6 sessions, each lasting 45 minutes (with extra activities on the accompanying VLE).

The course aims to:

  • build self confidence in writing;
  • improve basic skills for writing and confidence to apply them in different context;
  • improve understanding of sentence construction and punctuation, including dialogue;
  • plan and complete a short piece of written work.

Week 1 - Simple sentence construction and punctuation.
Week 2 - Develop and apply phonic skills; lists, labels and captions.
Week 3 - Developing sentences - adding dialogue.
Week 4 - Note taking and internet non fiction research.
Week 5 - Planning frames; set success criteria and begin writing.
Week 6 - Complete writing and review applying own success criteria.

The course runs for 6 weeks, 30 minutes twice a week.

The cost of this course is £96.00 per pupil (£48 within the East Riding of Yorkshire).

Special Educational Needs Courses

Basic English Support for Y5 - Y7

This course supports pupils who need to develop their basic English skills. It includes phonics - alphabet recognition and order, identification of phonemes, spelling strategies. Common spelling patterns, identification of mis-spelt words, sounding out and segmenting. Sentence level - sentence construction, simple punctuation. Comprehension - reading text for understanding.

The course runs twice weekly for 6 weeks. Each session lasts for 30 minutes.

Cost is £96.00 per pupil. £48.00 for pupils within the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Reading Fun for KS2 and EAL

This course is aimed at children reading at approximately Level 2/3 who read words but have little or no understanding of the text. The course is designed to develop and consolidate basic skills for reading and apply them in different contextual situations. Week 1 focuses on various skills and strategies needed for reading. Weeks 2 to 4 give opportunities to experiment and apply knowledge.

  • Week 1: Basic reading skills
  • Week 2: Making Sense
  • Week 3 and 4: Fiction - story sequencing and retelling
  • Week 5 and 6: Non-fiction

The course runs twice weekly for 6 weeks. Each session lasts 30 minutes.

Island Adventures for KS1

This is an exciting, innovative course which is based on one of the 'Katie Morag' stories written by Mairi Hedderwick.

It links the curriculum areas of literacy, ICT, geography, art and PE and is principally designed to be taught to eight more able Year 2 children from one school or nearby schools.

The course runs for 4 weeks. There are 4 sessions of 45 minutes and a half-day final session based in your school.

There needs to be a minimum of 6 children for this either in the same school or where children can easily be transported for the final half-day session (possibly a network link).

Cost is £150.00 per pupil in the Hull area and £75.00 for pupils in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
