Flights of Fancy for Y1 and Y2

The Flights of Fancy courses stimulate and challenge the narrative skills of groups of pupils who are gifted and talented in literacy.

Your Y1 and Y2 pupils will use the adjective-packed and superbly slimy story Toad by Ruth Brown as their inspiration.

Our DLC teacher will encourage pupils to explore the powerful adjectives in the text and how they are used to good effect.

From this they will develop ICT and online research skills by finding out more about animals, before using their research to write a story so bursting with description it may well leap off the screen and hop away!

Flights of Fancy for Y3 and Y4

A DLC teacher will guide your Y3 and Y4 pupils through a detailed study of the stunning illustrated book The Whales’ Song by Dyan Sheldon and Gary Blythe.

Pupils examine carefully the use of similes and how they create atmosphere, and consider the way characters’ feelings and emotions are expressed through text and illustration.

When they move onto planning and developing their own online narrative, the finished result should be simile-spectacular!

Internet Awareness

Primary schools sometimes worry that they don’t have the knowledge or the expertise to teach their pupils e-safety properly.

That’s why our Internet Awareness programme has been carefully created by teachers qualified in Internet safety issues, to provide everything a school needs to deliver e-safety education to their pupils without any specialist knowledge needed on the part of the classroom teacher.

E-safety education needs to start from an early age, and with this in mind our programme is split into two separate courses, Get Set for the Net which is aimed at Y2 pupils, and Y5 and Y6 Net Safety for upper KS2.

Together these provide age-appropriate and non-threatening coverage of every area of Internet safety, from the importance of personal information to knowing who you can trust, from chat-rooms to e-mail, from web browsing to mobile phones, and from instant messaging to cyberbullying.

The pre-recorded lessons and detailed teacher notes that can be used in the classroom are backed up by a range of follow-up quizzes, stories, websites and worksheets, enabling every school to be confident in their pupils’ ability to stay safe.

Literacy Boosters for Y6

Our Literacy Booster course brings together a group of Y6 pupils working at L3 to give them a boost in preparation for their KS2 SATs.

The units concentrate on each of the main genres of writing: report, narrative and persuasion.

Under the expert guidance of a DLC teacher, pupils revise the key features of each genre, and apply this knowledge to their own writing.

Using our special online website, pupils can write their own examples of each genre, and receive supportive feedback from our teachers at all stages. Pupils enjoy developing their ideas and sharing their work with each other in the virtual classroom.

The course finishes with a four lesson unit on comprehension, where pupils are supported to fine-tune their literal, inference and deduction skills with a range of online texts.

Our Literacy Booster course works equally well if schools wish to choose which units their pupils need help with, and we can accommodate such requests wherever possible.

Can your pupils find out how Hip Hop Harry’s fashion-sense changes with the seasons?

How about trying out some amazing maths magic tricks on the rest of the class?

Will they be able to visualise our eye-boggling shape puzzles?

And will they develop amazing algebra ability by the end of the course?

With tangrams, a Grand Prix and a Haunted House for pupils to grapple with, even a mathematical genius would be scratching their head!

Marvellous Maths

Marvellous Maths is a series of three courses that challenge and develop your Y5 and Y6 pupils who are gifted and talented in mathematics.

Schools can choose to do one, two or all three courses.

Our DLC teachers will guide you through a series of lessons that add breadth and enrichment to the learning taking place in the classroom.

They will collaborate, discuss and share ideas with each other using the tools available in our virtual classroom.

A wide range of mathematical ability and reasoning will be developed. Pupils will crack conundrums and codes, find hidden treasure, solving problems, puzzles and pentominoes on the way.

They will become magicians if they can unravel the mathematics behind the tricks, historians if they can tackle the puzzles faced by famous mathematicians, and experts in optical illusions as long as their eyes don’t end up in a twist.

Even the odd skull or two will be popping up in unexpected places!

Numeracy Boosters for Y6

Our Numeracy Booster course brings together a group of Y6 pupils working at L3 to give them a boost in preparation for their KS2 SATs.

Our DLC teachers carefully support, encourage and motivate pupils with each lesson focussing on a different area of the mathematics curriculum.

We cover all those areas that pupils may struggle to get to grips with: place value, problem solving, fractions, decimals, handling data, measures and many more areas are addressed, and our virtual classroom ensures that all pupils are fully engaged and able to contribute from start to finish.

The DLC teacher will also provide a range of follow-up activities to help consolidate the pupils’ learning, including SATs practice tests on our special website.

Our Numeracy Booster course works equally well if schools wish to choose particular areas to focus on rather than the full course, and we can accommodate such requests wherever possible.

Reading Fun

With Reading Fun our DLC teachers carefully support your pupils working at level 2 to help move them onto level 3.

There’s a strong emphasis on building self-confidence in reading and helping them improve their understanding of what they read, which also makes the course ideal for children with English as an additional language.

The first half of Reading Fun will concentrate on the skills and strategies needed for reading with understanding, making sure these are firmly in place.

The teacher will then provide lots of exciting opportunities to apply these skills to a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. Reading has never seemed such fun!

Rising Stars

Rising Stars brings together a group of Y6 pupils already working at L4 in mathematics to give them a boost up to L5 in preparation for end of key stage assessment.

Using a similar approach to our Numeracy Boosters course, a DLC teacher will support, encourage and motivate the group using all the tools in our virtual classrooms.

Each lesson focuses on a specific aspect of the mathematics curriculum.

A whole range of areas are covered, and we tackle those tricky aspects such as negative numbers, algebra, fractions and ratios, data handling and decimals.

Follow-up quizzes and resources ensure pupils can consolidate what has been covered after the lesson.

By the time the group reach the end of the course they really will be aiming for the stars!

Sex and Relationships Education

Our primary Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) programme, written by teachers with particular expertise in Personal Social and Health Education, is made up of two elements: a series of six pre-recorded lessons for each year group, and a range of follow-up activities including websites, quizzes, worksheets and certificates.

The programme firmly covers the objectives from the 2000 DfES Sex and Relationships Education guidance, and as well as delivering important information for young children on their changing bodies during puberty, we also emphasize the important role of marriage and family life.

Animated characters are used throughout the lessons, providing a non-threatening context that will allow pupils to deal with the sensitive issues addressed.

Detailed teacher notes guide the classroom teacher through the content of each lesson, and provide ideas for follow-up work.

By embedding the Y5 and Y6 lessons into your school’s PSHE curriculum, pupils will receive a gentle yet thorough coverage of all the key areas of SRE in primary schools.

The establishing of ground rules, how male and female bodies change during puberty, families, emotional and sexual relationships, and the role of peer and media pressures are all carefully considered.
