Lesson Setup

Each pupil will need access to the following:

1. A computer or laptop. Most modern (post 2002) computers will be suitable.

2. A reasonable quality headset and microphone combination. Separate speakers and hand held mic are not suitable.

Your sessions will be delivered via LearnLinc (iLinc).

This will require you to download software from links in this webpage.

1. Click on the ONLINE LESSONS button in the Quick Links panel on the right.

Setting Up the Headset

Lessons require a headset with microphone to be connected to the machine that the pupil will sit at.

You will find two plugs at the end of your headset, these are often coloured pink (microphone) and black or green (headphones) or will have little symbols of a microphone and headset.

Please make sure these are fully pushed into the corresponding sockets on your computer.

Some computers have sockets at both the front and back of the computer, and if the headset doesn't appear to work properly in one set, try using the other.

If it has opened, you may have several items listed in the ‘Select Playback Sound Device’ list.

The highlighted one is usually correct, so unless you have reason to believe this is wrong, click next.

You should now hear a voice speaking through the headset.

If it is too loud or too quiet you can adjust the volume slider.

If you cannot hear a voice there is a problem with your headset.

Check the plugs of your headset are in the correct sockets on the computer.

Check there is no mute switch on the headset cable that is accidentally selected.

If there is a volume control on the headset wire itself, check that the volume is turned up.

If this doesn’t work, try changing the headset.

Otherwise your computer’s sound settings may be incorrect and you will need to consult a technician for advice.

Click Play if you want to hear the voice again, and when you are happy click next.

On the next screen, you are asked to speak into your microphone.

As you speak, you should see the coloured bars on the display move across, changing colour.

LearnLinc will automatically adjust the volume to a suitable level.

If the bars do not move at all, there is a problem with your microphone.

Check the plugs on the headset are in the correct sockets on the computer.

Check the microphone is positioned close to but not touching the wearer’s mouth.

Also, the recording microphone needs to be selected and turned up, and the playback microphone needs muting, these can be found by double clicking on the speaker in the bottom right-hand of your screen.

If this doesn’t work, try changing the headset.

Otherwise your computer’s sound settings may be incorrect and you will need to consult your technician for advice.

When you are happy, click Next.

You are asked to click the Record button and speak into the microphone for four seconds.

If you still have problems with your headset, consult the DLC for advice.

Once completed you will automatically join the class.

5. Here you will find instructions on how to check for necessary software and the software downloads if you need them.
